You’ve probably heard that if your children have diabetes are also at risk of developing this disease. This is true.
In the past 10 years, diabetes has increased approximately 50% of the population of the United States and has also increased dramatically in other parts of the world.
In a recent study by the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that between now and 2050 the total number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the United States increased by 165%.
Children are the greatest concern
The worse news is that Hispanic children are at higher risk of developing diabetes. It is estimated that about 53% of girls and 45% of men born in 2000 are likely to develop diabetes sometime during their lives. But this does not mean they will develop diabetes in childhood. However, over the last decade has been that diabetes, previously presented in people over age 40, now appears increasingly in children and youth.
Obesity is one of the factors that trigger diabetes and lack of physical activity helps the development of obesity and diabetes. If we continue with our bad habits and allow our children to grow up watching television and computer games without playing sports and not eating healthy, we help them gain weight.
Prevention
Although diabetes is a disease that is spreading worldwide at an alarming rate, the good news is that it can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle.
And of course the first action you can take to prevent diabetes is to lose excess weight and keep the active lifestyle.
Indeed, in a recent study by the National Institutes of Health of the United States showed that if only practice 30 minutes of exercise a day and lose 5 to 7% of your weight (about 10 to 12 pounds or 5 to 6 kilograms for a person weighing about 200 pounds or 90 kilos) is sufficient to decrease the risk of diabetes.
So it is so important that if you have diabetes, develop good habits of living among your family. Imagine that your children can reduce the chances of developing diabetes just staying slim and exercise.
We know it’s hard to change our habits, but because of the importance of maintaining our health and our family we need to make an effort. In fact, with some small changes we can achieve much.
Here are some tips for you to increase the welfare of you and your family:
- Serve fruits and vegetables at every meal.
- Establish a routine of exercise you enjoy and in which the whole family can participate.
- Avoid having sweets at home.
- Try to get everyone breakfast before leaving home and to bring fruit or something healthy to eat between meals.
- Learn about the care of diabetes in the company of all members of your family.
Sure you’ll be able to devise some other actions to help improve your health and your family and away from diabetes. Really worth it.
